10 Reading Tips for Parents of Children Under 10
Every parent only has this one dilemma. They simply can’t make reading interesting enough for their kids. Reading helps develop children’s vocabulary, contextualization and understanding of different expressions. Making reading fun may be a difficult job but it is certainly not impossible.
Let’s have a look at a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your kids.
1. Read When They Are Comfortable
Choose your reading time when your kids are feeling very comfortable. This is why most parents choose bedtime for reading stories to their kids. Kids are more relaxed and receptive when they are tired of playing around all day.
2. Let Your Kids Choose the Book
When you begin, don’t start reading just any book you pick from the shelf. Pull out a few books and let your child select which one they would like to read. In this way, they will observe the covers of each of the books closely and pick the one that seems interesting to them. They will be curious from the very beginning to know what happens in the story and you will have their undivided attention.
3. Lose the Monotone
While reading a story to your child, your voice should be full of emotions that the characters in the books feel. If you keep on reading monotonously your child will lose interest in the story. Besides, expressionless reading is not beneficial to young children anyways.
4. Initiate a Discussion about the Story after Reading
After you finish reading, encourage your child to express their thoughts about the story. Ask your child questions about the main characters, like after reading Ollie’s Easter Eggs you can ask, ‘What do you think? Should Ollie have hidden the Easter Eggs without telling his friends?’ Your child can have any number of thoughts. You will simply trigger their interest in stories by letting them talk about the story.
5. Read Books on Various Subjects
Every time you read, choose different topics. Introduce new flavors to keep reading a fun activity for your kids. Give them something to look forward to for the next time you will read together. Their anticipation of which genre you may be reading the next time will do half your job!
6. Repeat Favorites
When you discover a book that is your child’s favorite, keep repeating it every two to three days. Kids love to read the same stories over and over again. Each time they learn something new from the same story.
7. Enjoy Rhymes to Your Best
When you are reading books with rhymes, let your child sing along with you. In fact, encourage them to do it so they can enjoy the whole experience!
8. Let Your Child Act out Their Favorite Characters
Some kids love to act out their favorite characters from their favorite books. If your kids do too, don’t stop them. Enjoy their performance and let them believe they are as cute as the duckling they are reading about.
9. Choose Books Full of Adventures
Everything is an adventure in a kid’s life as they are doing it for the first time. Choose books with adventures so your child can relate to the characters easily.
10. Reward Your Child for Reading Before Bed
Give simple rewards to your kids in appreciation of their inclination to read before bed. Make them hot chocolate with extra cream, or buy them the candy they had been asking for the last time you visited the store. Just show you are happy they like to read.
